The New York Times vs. Sullivan

The case I chose was The New York Times vs. Sullivan.
Although the case is not a libel case, it is one that is considered an "actual malice case" due to the fact that libel did not exist in 1964.

Apparently an article was run called "Heed Their Rising Voices" which talked about the freedom fighters all around the southern states and the struggles they were having. It mentioned how police officials were tear gassing, as well as hosing down the protesters with fire hoses while they attempted to buy coffee.

What I find so intriguing about this case is that the Sullivan was suing The New York Times, when his name wasn't even mentioned in the news article, but rather the police force he was on. He won his case against The New York Times and was granted $500,000.

[slideshow linkage]

I really enjoyed this slide show, not only because of the topic, but i also felt that the images went along with the story being told. It was a shame that there was no ambient sound or music, but i did not feel that is was necessary, because the topic had hooked me immediately, and the story kept me interested.

to quote or not to quote?

Is it okay to clean up a source’s quote for poor grammar or should you only run quotes verbatim (word for word what they said)? Explain and support your answer.

I would only run quotes verbatim, not only because if you misquote someone, they might be annoyed with your article, but if you change a quote, then its technically no longer a quote.

If i were to come across this situation, i think the best solution to the problem would be to just paraphrase it. If the person being quoted states something too awkward sounding, im pretty sure the readers would prefer hearing it from someone that can say it better.

Anecdotal/Narrative Lead

"Steve Brandvold is retiring but instead of being put out to pasture, he is heading to greener pastures -- literally."
[link]

The writer uses a narrative lead in this story because its seems to be the only way to go about it. This news event has no tragedies nor does it have anything really "new breaking" its just a tale for readers who are more intrigued by human-interest stories.

nut graf: Brandvold, who for years juggled the dual roles of Pacifica fire marshal and building official, has decided it's time for a new challenge -- that of gentleman rancher amid the pastoral Pennsylvania countryside

anticipating nothing leaves little room for let down..

Being interviewed was an interesting experience i suppose, but like i have mentioned before in previous posts, I am not too great at talking about myself. Interestingly enough, John was very gifted when it came to making me feel comfortable with the interview. I didn't feel put on the spot, nor did i feel as if i were being interrogated, which is always a good thing. However, spending the time to let this person get a feel for me and who i am, and not taking the time to write the actual interview did have some sort of a negative affect on me. I felt as if i wasn't as interesting as i should have been, and that i wasn't worth the time it might take to write about me. But no hard feelings, school has just started up again and John probably has a lot on his plate right now from what i have learned about him.

John Harrison

John Harrison, originally born in Fremont, has lived in California his entire life and still loves everything about it. Although he loves where he resides, he cannot say the same for his governor. Upon asking him how he felt when Schwarzenegger was elected, his response seemed to consist of bitter feelings about the whole situation. "Yes, the other governor was doing a terrible job, but it wasn't worth impeaching him and re-establishing a new governor within a matter of weeks. Especially considering who the choice was for the re-election." Digging deeper into Johns thoughts on government matters, I learned quite a few interesting things about him, such as his interest in the election, and his hopeless desire for Edwards to move forward in the primaries. Among these thoughts on politics, I also became aware of his resentment against the war, he explained to me "We ran in there head first, we never had a plan," and i am sure he is not alone in his beliefs.

On a lighter note, Harrison is deeply interested in the media, his favorite sources include, "The Onion", a parody newspaper, and a web site called "sfgate.com". He loves many of the Journalism classes he has already attended and continues to move forward with the subject. Due to Harrison's fine interest in journalism and writing he has joined The Skyline View's news team, and is also currently working on a chat book of short stories. Before ending this fascinating meeting with Harrison's i had to ask him one more question about his thoughts on college days at skyline, and his reply was simply this, " Skyline is where you choose your life path."

slightly me, slightly wallflower..

So, this is my online blog, brought to you by journalism 120. I am not too exicted about describing myself, but i will give it my best attempt. I am a 19 year old individual who has never really considered herself a female, but more or less the opposite of a boy. I enjoy all forms of art, expression, as well as creation. I am infact a nomad, who has moved back and forth from each side of the country about 4 times, and i thouroughly enjoy seeing life in multiple perspectives. I am currently enrolled in skyline, which is a great accomplishment for myself, having homeschooled myself for the past 3 years of my life, while not exactly being at home. Unfortunatley though, i have not picked my major yet, as i want to give myself time to decide before i become dedicated to my choice. I work a full-time job, as well as fully support myself, and i have nothing but confidence in the ways i will revolutionize in the days to come.
